A Closer Look at Movie Ratings

Most families, before ever purchasing a ticket to a movie in a theater, will make sure to check one thing: the rating. A film's rating is designed to give people a way to judge if the film's material is suitable for adults or children. In the United States a film's rating is determined by an non-profit organization called the Motion Picture Association of America or MPAA. The MPAA rating system was put in place to help guide a parent's decision on whether or not the content of the film is appropriate for their children.

The rating system uses the following guidelines to help adults rate the content of a movie. The rating "G" is the lowest rating possible. A "G" rating indicates that material in the film is suitable for general audiences and that all ages may be admitted. A "PG" rating indicates that parental guidance during the film is suggested because some material may not be suitable. A "PG-13" rating indicates that some material may be inappropriate for children under the age of 13. An "R" rating means that the film is restricted and anyone under the age of 17 requires adult accompaniment. There is also a lesser-known "NC-17" rating which indicates that no one under 17 will be admitted. Although the rating system is a great guide, it is not always 100% accurate. Fortunately, there are many movie sites where parents can read details about the content or watch a movie clip to help them get a better idea of what to expect.

3 Things You Need to Know About Silly 3D Glasses

This article takes a look at some common misunderstandings about the 3D glasses needed to watch a 3D-TV or a 3D movie.

1: Isn't 3D Just Silly Special Effects With Daft Glasses?

Yes, and no. If you've seen Avatar, you've seen the power of 3D when used to help immerse the viewer into a story. We naturally see the world in 3D, so it only makes sense that giving a sense of depth to any movie we watch in a cinema, or any movie we watch on a 3D-TV at home will add to the experience if done well.

Previously, 3D effects were used more for "shock" value, where objects appeared to come towards you out of the screen. This was probably to distract your attention away from the fact that using the traditional cardboard red/blue glasses impaired the colour resolution of what you were watching!

Now, with the widespread use of polarised glasses in cinemas, the 3D effects can be seen while retaining a full colour palette, as was demonstrated in the jaw-droppingly beautiful Avatar world of Pandora.

So, in the past you would've experienced 3D special effects that only added "shock" value to a movie, but now 3D is being used in more subtle ways to increase your immersion in the movie and strengthen the storytelling. The technology has changed, and so have the glasses.

2: When 3D-TV's Go On Sale, Won't They Use Heavy, Ugly 3D Glasses?

Some will, some won't. It's a common misunderstanding that all 3D TV's use only the heavier "Active Shutter Glasses" which look like a techno-geeks idea of cool shades, require recharging and will be quite expensive. There are a few manufacturers promoting those glasses such as Sony and Samsung, but there are others such as LG promoting the same "passive" polarised glasses that you get in the cinema.

In fact, LG recently got together with Sky in the UK to broadcast a match between Manchester United and Arsenal in 3D, and they opted for using the polarised glasses paired with their new 3D TV.

The passive polarised glasses don't use a battery, don't need recharging and are much cheaper. Obviously, when you can get a pair of glasses with a cinema ticket AND get to see the movie, the glasses can't be very expensive!

3: Can I Get 3D-TV Without Silly Glasses?

At the moment, no. The current batch of 3D-TV's being released all require you to wear glasses of one kind or another. The technology already exists to show 3D images without needing to wear glasses, but it's not ready for primetime yet. It's very expensive, so limited to the "commercial" sector, and has only a few viewing angles where the 3D image works. Also, the 3D effect can't be turned off on a 3D glasses-free TV, so you'd have to use it as a dedicated 3D display, and with the current amount of 3D content, it's not likely that people will want such a display any time soon. However, looking ten years into the future, it's a distinct possibility that 3D TV's will all be "glasses free".

Ten TV Shows That Went To Rerun Heaven Way Too Soon

TOP CAT - 1961-1962

This cartoon came out in the early 60s just after The Flintstones proved that a prime time cartoon could work. Top Cat was funnier-a wisecracking Sgt. Bilko-like cat who ran con games in a NY back alley with the help of 5 buddies under the watchful eye of Officer Dibble of the NYPD.

How could it miss?

But it did because TV only needed one prime time cartoon and The Flintstones came first. Ask the geniuses in TV land-this was a brilliant show. Yeah we still miss those funny cats.

CAR 54 WHERE ARE YOU? - 1961-1963

A New York cop show from the early 60s. This was a sitcom that should have lived a long, happy life-how could you possibly miss with Herman and Grandpa Munster playing NYPD cops with room temperature IQs? It was an early retirement from the force-ratings were lukewarm after the first season. That took Car 54 over a big cliff into a fiery landing because funny network TV cop shows have a short shelf life even in 2010.

Goodbye Herman, goodbye Grandpa-see you a few years later in The Munsters.

F TROOP - 1965-1967

This 60s Western comedy took an arrow in the throat after only a few seasons. It was pricey to film and going to color in the second season caused the bean counters to take it down hard and fast. Better than average ratings wasn't enough of a Calvary charge to save this Western comedy classic.

Too bad - it was a great show, but the geniuses in charge of finances refused to circle the wagons for Corporal Agarn, Sgt. O'Rourke and Roaring Chicken.

NIGHT GALLERY - 1970-1973

Rod Serling said goodbye to television in the early 70s with this horror anthology-they treated Rod like crap but he still brought his A-game. That wasn't enough. Rod Serling could read a grocery list and scare the liver out of you but as usual...the chuckleheads that run TV knew better. They took away any real power behind the scenes and, in a real life horror story; he became a pale imitation of the power guy Rod Serling from the classic TV era so...they sent him to the real Twilight Zone after only a few seasons.

KOLCHAK NIGHT STALKER - 1974-1975

We're not talking about the last 21st Century version of this show. We're talking about the classic Darren McGavin early 70s version. The one where he played the chicken hearted big city reporter who drove a piece of crap car. McGavin liked the basic premise behind Kolchak, but he bucked at the "monster of the week" format. That, and lukewarm ratings gave both network and actor common ground to drive a stake through the heart of this highly underrated TV series. This show was fantastic but once it died, they shouldn't have made it undead in that horrible 2005 version. That was true terror.

BUFFALO BILL - 1983-1984

This mid 70s show had Dabney Coleman playing arguably the most obnoxious TV personality in the history of TV. The problem was that people were actively turning the channel on Bob because they weren't smart enough to see the obvious...he was just a TV character. TV execs folded the tent and Buffalo Bob ended up looking for work. Yet another black day in television history and a sad comment on the IQ of the average viewer-Buffalo Bill was just too good for mainstream TV.

THE JOB - 2001-2002

The Job shared a very similar pattern to Buffalo Bill with a negative lead character and viewers that were a little dim. Dennis Leary played a cynical, burned out NYPD police detective with substance abuse problems-this kind of role seems to come far too easy for Dennis. Could be that he's a great method actor or he's had a lot of on the "job" training. Either way they cancelled the crap out of this show way too soon. As Leary would say, "those @#$%ing morons". The Job was a great show but anti-hero lead guys don't seem to click with the average TV sit-com fan. People with room temperature IQs just don't get it.

GREG THE BUNNY 2002

They canceled this show and yet they allowed evil crap like Gilmore Girls to choke off intelligent thought. This proves one thing- there is no God. This "Muppets in the dirty world of show biz" was just not PC enough, maybe the TV guys cater to the lowest form of life, maybe the new owners (Disney) wanted more wholesome kiddy fare-whatever the reason, we lost the funniest puppets since Kermit the Frog got drunk at the Emmys.

ACTION - 1999-2000

This was about a failed Hollywood producer trying to get back in the game who acted like a Hollywood producer-loud, obnoxious and egocentric while trying to survive in a bloody game. Action pulled no punches in its treatment of Hollywood. It was funny, insightful and accurate, but it never got great ratings-it didn't work, but a few years later Entourage did. Go figure.

ANDY RICHTER CONTROLS THE UNIVERSE - 2002-2003

This show shouldn't have been as funny as it was for one reason- Andy Richter. But it was because it offered a look inside and out of a man's mind. Everything he said, did or thought was shown as part of the storyline. Something like this can crash and burn pretty fast if it's badly handled. The woods are full of TV shows that suck at subtle, but this show was really well written and truly funny-a death sentence in network TV. And... unfortunately Mr. Richter didn't control the universe-unfunny TV execs did.

We also like to take on non-car issues on a regular basis on our daily blog because it makes us look a lot smarter than we really are. Plus you can insult a car guy about his taste in music or movies but never hack on his car-those guys always have tire irons handy. It's fun, it's occasionally controversial and it draws women into the site-we're like an automotive beer commercial. We need the women in the picture to make it interesting. But we're still going to talk about 57 Chevys and vintage Mustangs.

Is 2012 the Best Disaster Movie Ever?

If you are wondering whether or not you should see the recent disaster movie "2012," allow me to be your guide. In this quick review, I'll let you know why this may very well be the best disaster movie ever made. It is a great movie filled with special effects, tough decisions, and believable characters.

The movie starts out with a couple of scientists, one from India, and one an employee in some capacity with the United States government, deep in an underground laboratory. They discover some troubling information regarding the core of the Earth. If the data is correct, the world as we know it doesn't have much longer.

The first then they need to figure out, is should they tell the whole world that everybody is going to die soon, or try and keep it under wraps for as long as possible?

The world governments decide to covertly plan an escape for a small percentage of the world's population, with the rest of the people left to fend for themselves. Luckily, the main character, played fantastically by John Cusack, happens across a sage in the wilderness played very convincingly by Woody Harrelson. As these normal characters discover the impending end of the world, they must race against time to arrive at the secret location known only to the super rich, and the super smart, as determined by the world governments.

And as in most disaster movies, we are met with several likable characters who must look their impending death in the face. While this isn't easy, this is a disaster movie after all, and most people, unfortunately, are going to die.

And just like Noah and his family, the secret plan is to load up some arks with people and two of every animal. Hopefully, they will stay on these arks long enough until the earth sorts itself out, when they can find some dry land and start over again.

The question that is posed to those on board the ships, is what to do with all the blue collar workers who actually built he arks? The secret project was paid for by the rich that wanted to by themselves a seat to safety on the new age arks that were secretly being built, but would they be able to leave the blue collars who built their ships to die?

It's a tough question that has filled many psychology textbooks. If you can only save a few people, who do you choose? The rich? The smart? The lucky?

While the choices made in the movie may not reflect your own personal values, the movie is well worth watching, and at the very least is a splendid two hours of fantastic entertainment. This movie gets four out of five stars, and my full blessing to spend your DVD rental money for the week.

The most popular way to watch movies is right here on your computer. To find out how, come on over to the movie download site today to find out how you can quickly and legally download and watch full movies.
