Is the Movie 2012 Fact Or Fiction?

I was watching the movie 2012 yesterday on board my flight from Kualu Lumpur, Malaysia to London. While we're at it, when I travel outside the West, I am constantly reminded how much has changed in only a few years. Airport 'security' has reached ridiculous levels. I went trough two airports in Bangkok and Kualu Lumpur without any problems only to be stopped and withheld in London to have my bags and liquids checked and scanned. I don't think I will ever look like a terrorist either. These safety measures are largely unnecessary, even the experts say so. The goal of course is to make people used to the government or corporate agent snooping trough your bag. Avoid flying from any British airport if you can!

Back to the movie 2012, starring John Cusack and Woody Harrelson, it's about the phenomena that is the end of the Mayan calendar on December 21'st, 2012. Many people have interpreted this to mean that something significant will happen on that date. Some Christians believe this is the apocalypse, the reapening. Some scientists believe this marks the entry of the mysterious Planet X into the solar system, which would cause havoc from it's Jupiter size gravity. Others believe 2012 is about WW3 and the nuclear devastation that would most likely follow.

In the movie, Hollywood tells us that 2012 will be triggered by solar storms that will cause the crust and core of the earth to crumble. That's not a novel idea.

What is interesting is the way Hollywood interprets what needs to be done. In this movie, the President of the United States enters into a cabal with the rest of the world to save the elite in bunkers far below the earth, while the 'common people' are left to fend for themselves. That part I believed. Then I was introduced to Woody Harrelsons character, a long haired, long bearded, 'conspiracy wacko'. Of course this is a usual plot to make anyone on to the shady doings of the government and elite seem like nuts.
