Westside Story (1961) - "Westside Story" is a take-off of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," except it takes place in New York and has some added Latin zest. "Westside Story" follows the feuding gangs, the Puerto Rican Sharks led by Bernardo and the Caucasian Jets led by Riff. Just like the Capulets and the Montague's in "Romeo and Juliet," the feud between the Sharks and the Jets is intense and deep. Everything is turned upside down when Riff's best friend Tony and Bernardo's younger sister Maria meet at a dance and immediately fall in love. Maria and Tony cultivate a secret and passionate relationship and plan to run away together to escape the escalating feuds between their families. As they are planning their escape, the Sharks and the Jets plan a rumble to decide who gains control of the streets. Maria sends Tony to stop the childish violence, but the plan does not take place like either of them expected it to, leaving a tragic ending to a glorious love story. This is a must see in high definition as the characters swing their hips and dance on top of rooftops against the New York skyline.

The Wizard of Oz (1939) - "The Wizard of Oz" is one of the most well known and most referenced movies of all time. One of the first feature films to be filmed in color, this fantastic tale is one that can be watched repeatedly, and the land of Oz is something that just seems more enjoyable in high definition. When Dorothy and her dog Toto are caught in a tornado riding along the streets of Kansas, they are lifted and dropped off in the land of Oz, where she meets some great friends. Dorothy and Toto befriend the Tin Man who is missing a heart, the Scarecrow who is missing a brain and the lion who is missing courage. They decide to follow the yellow brick road to the Wizard of Oz to try and find these things, but all Dorothy wants is to go back home to Kansas. The Shining Synopsis and Review

We will never know what made Shining what it is today. Whether it was Jack Nicholson's powerful performance, or was it Stephen King's story, or the way that Stanley Kubrick depicted it on screen. Of course, Stephen King has gone on record to say that he wasn't quite happy with the way the movie had shaped up.

However, 'The Shining' is a class apart movie and story. For one, the horror aspect of the movie itself is so subtle that one wonders whether there were actually anyone haunting the Outlook hotel, or was it just a figment of imagination of Jack Torrance, who is gradually going insane because of writer's block and possibly cabin fever. What was refreshing about the movie was that it did away with killed off lovers, or tortured souls, or even people with a past. This was a simple, honest to goodness psychological thriller that made us understand that it is the scenario that is haunting, not the story behind it.

Throughout the movie, Kubrick has used rich and vibrant colors, which gave him the opportunity to create some very iconic sequences, like the blood splattered foyer, or the two dead almost identical twins. All through the movie, the camera chases the characters, giving us an idea of how the happenings in the movies are chasing the protagonists, enveloping them in a world of their own.

Every sequence of the takes the viewer by surprise, be it the sudden conversation that informs the viewer of Danny's ESP, or even the Butler's sudden turn to speak telepathically to Danny. My favorite sequence in the movie is where Danny rides his tricycle on a wooden flooring with carpets put on strategic locations, thereby creating a scenario where there's a grating sound of the wheels on the wooden flooring at one time and then the soft silence of the wheels on the carpet at some places.

Movie Review - The Ugly Truth (2009)

If you want to see a dirty version of When in Rome, watch The Ugly Truth. It is your typical romance set in the world of shock news casting? Maybe I'm really out of it, but come on. How ridiculous is this?

The acting was fine, and the story was okay, too. But, surely for just the shock value, the continual explicit sexual punch lines left this movie trite and quite common place.

This movie could have been a lot better if they would have worked on the plot more - but, even with that said - I did watch the entire movie. So it does have some redeeming value to it, though not much.

Maybe I'm just a little too jaded to enjoy romantic movies anymore. I'm probably the guy, at any rate, who had given up on dating and relationships. Wait a minute, I AM the guy. As much as this movie tries, in a really awkward way, to claim there is that "one" person out there for everyone or that relationships do work, it left me bored about half way through, wanting something different. When in Rome, I thought, had much more plot, even though it was not at all original. The Ugly Truth is, actually, not ugly - its just unoriginal.

I would not recommend this movie, even though it was well filmed and has talented acting in it. It's just way too typical, looking for cheap laughs, simply because the writing isn't able to carry it over. Run. Run.

"Rann" - When Media Starts Playing Politics

Rann is a Hindi word which means "Battle". A movie based on political drama and media coverage in the country. How dirty politics can get and how corrupt media can get! And who loses, the people of the country who get sandwiched between all this political drama and ultimately have to pay a heavy price for the greed of a few individuals.

Movie begins with the ideology of the character played by Amitabh shown, how he is always supporting and showing nothing but truth on his News Channel and how his channel is losing TRP coz the news is not sensationalized enough. People in his channel, his employees; even his own son is not happy about it and want to sensationalize issues, so they get better TRPs and money in the long run.

This greed to become the number one news channel forces Amitabh's Son Jai to get involved with a corrupt politician and industrialist and twist around the facts to make the news hot and happening. This ultimately leads to the politician winning the general elections and becoming the Prime Minister of the country. But among all these people is one true journalist, who has grown up watching Amitabh and has learnt his values and ideology from him. He smells a dead rat and sets about to investigate on his own.

Does he succeed in finding enough proof? Does he manage to convince Amitabh about the guilt of his son? Or is he also silenced by death like many others? That's all the story is about.

This movie is a typical Ram Gopal Verma movie when it comes to direction, dark and shady. Varied camera angles, which is so typical of RGV. Amitabh's talent is much wasted in the movie; he could have been used to do so much more. It's an out and out Riteish Deshmukh movie, he is the central character and he is the one who is true and devoted to his profession and sets about investigating the truth. They could have made this movie much more interesting and far-reaching to the audience. The message is conveyed but the lecture given by Amitabh towards the end of the movie, makes no impact at all and actually dulls down the message they could have conveyed minus the lecture in the end.

Audience now-a-days is intelligent enough and what do these directors think? They think audience would appreciate if they over-look small & silly points like not using a pair of gloves when you enter someone's house and touch everything around, when that person is wanted by the Police? You show the entire movie, sequence of events and let the audience derive the message and learning, why do you have to give a 5 minute long lecture and bore the audience?

All and all just an average movie, concept was good but it lacked the appeal!
