Movie Review - Teen Patti

As the end credits roll in Teen Patti we see A Film by Leena Yadav as if we have witnessed a masterpiece from the director which is not the case in reality. Yet again we see a film which takes its heart from a Hollywood film, this time the movie is a 2008 movie called 21. The film is all about mathematics or if we wish to be particular it's about probability. Ironically the director seems to be a novice in terms of probability as the chances of this film excelling are pretty low.

The movie opens new gates of boredom to a viewer and lacks substance as incoherence and slow pace looms throughout the film. The director seems to be in two minds as she borrows the script from Hollywood but fails to implement it completely as the protagonist happens to be Amitabh Bachchan who cannot be portrayed in a negative shade. So we see the conscience taking over the evil things for Amitabh Bachchan's character which signals doom for the film in its initial stages itself.

The film is about a teacher called Venkat Subramaniam played by Amitabh Bachchan who is a professor in mathematics (often termed lunatic by colleagues). He has cracked a theory in probability and is out there in casinos to prove it with his students and a fellow teacher called Shantanu (played by R Madhvan). Initially they begin with small dens but end up at big private parties and are raking in crores. All this seems funny while writing and at the time of watching.

The film works on least amount of logic and seems to be obsessed with Amitabh Bachchan and Sir Ben Kingsley; otherwise they would have thought of writing a good script and story to carry the film. There is gambling going around in a college of repute and no one seems to take a notice. There is a serious issue of money and danger which director tries to raise with the film, but the story supports the cause no where in the film. There is absolute fantasy going around in the college and no one is spared from the hands of director. We see a couple from college claiming themselves to be Bonnie and Clyde and a professor is seen going to parties with a Blonde and she says Biscottino to him. These scenes while trying to portray the declining values offer nothing and are plain comic in essence. The guest appearances remain guest to us and do spare us from the horror.

The talent of Amitabh Bachchan is wasted and the film stretches like a bubble gum and it is the end that gives maximum relief to the viewer. There are quite a lot of The film can be best enjoyed in trailers as there is nothing new or concrete in the film.

Oscar Battle - The Hurt Locker PK Avatar

As what we have seen in my previous article (The Hurt Locker PK Avatar - Which Will Be Oscar Winner?), both Cameron and Bigelow are the hot favorites to win the best director Oscar at next month's Academy Awards bash. And although Cameron may have looked like the front-runner by winning the Golden Globe with "Avatar", her ex-wife Bigelow ("The Hurt Locker") is absolutely a strong rival in awards race, who won BAFTA's Best Director Award as well as most of the other major best director gongs including Directors Guild of America award.

If Kathryn Bigelow wins in this Oscar Awards race, it will be the best revenge to James Cameron. (Although it is reported that they are good friends now, no woman can bear being betrayed and I believe she is not an exception)

Ok, let's first take a look at their short marriage.

Cameron and Bigelow were married in 1989, but this famed director left her in 1991 for the actress of "Terminator", Linda Hamilton.

After that, Bigelow committed himself to her word and career. However, it seems that she was not so successful as her ex-husband.

However, God will pay your dues some day, and The Hurt Locker allows Bigelow head-to-head this season for awards and has taken the high road when it comes to dealing with her ex in the spotlight.

"Kathryn was definitely the underdog before," says an insider. "But now it's feasible that she could win the Oscar, too."

But comparing with his former husband Cameron, she is much calm. At the backstage of Critics' Choice Awards, she was asked what she thought about beating her ex-husband James Cameron in two categories (the best director as well as the best picture), but she skillfully fenced with the question.

On the contrary, Cameron openly claimed he didn't care the "best director" of Oscar.

"I have already got an Oscar. I've got a couple of them... I don't really need another one." he said.

Anyway, I support Kathryn Bigelow and firmly believe that The Hurt Locker will beat Avatar in Oscar Awards.

Life Change, Which Harry Potter Character Are You?

Think of the three main characters in the Harry Potter movies. There is Harry, Hermione, and Ron. They each have their own personality. When you think of the life change you want to make, which Harry potter character are you?

Harry

Harry is a mix of a couple of different types. His character is strong, but he is a little reluctant to be who he really is, the chosen one.

Is this you? You may be strong in your personality, your character, but you are a little afraid to be who you really are, or who you really want to be. You want to change your life to be more who you were meant to be, but you aren't sure that you can pull it off.

You are the chosen one. You were created to be unique and special. There has never been anyone exactly like you and never will be again. You have to find the courage to step up to the plate and be that chosen one. Use your strength and get over your own false sense of humility.

Hermione

Hermione has a lot of intelligence and is not afraid to use it when there is little risk. She is insecure about her half blood heritage and is not sure if she really belongs or not. She struggles to step into her abilities and her sexuality.

Is this you? You really have a lot of intelligence, but you are afraid that you don't quite fit in. You like being smart and knowing what to do, but when it comes to it, you don't always do so because you are afraid that you don't fit in and might not be accepted. You want to become stronger in your self worth and you would like to be more the man or woman you are.

Life change is hard for you because you are not sure you want to change. Things are fine the way they are and if they change, you are unsure of your place in the whole scheme of things.

Use your intelligence and step into the life you are meant to live. You can be so much more and be so much more to the world and the people around you if you would simply be brave enough.

Ron

Ron is unsure about nearly everything. When the chips are down, Ron shows a lot of strength, but most of the time he would just as soon fade into the woodwork. He is jealous of Harry and nearly any one who seems to be able to stand on their own.

Is this you? You really want to be a strong person and stand out from the crowd, but you do the exact opposite. Even your posture shows your insecurity. If you could change your life, you would be the life of the party and the hero of the day. Unfortunately, you are so insecure in yourself that you can never bring yourself to make that change. You need others around you to bring out your true nature.

You can be so much more! Allow life change to take you and make you into the person you are meant to be! Stand tall and know that you are as good as anyone else and that you do have something to contribute.

Who are you really?

I had some fun there with the Harry Potter characters. You may not see them the way I described at all. The character types are real enough, however. Did you see yourself in any of them?

You can be so much more than you are if you would only allow the change to take place. It will take work and there will be many challenges. You will face your own mortal enemy, but in truth, you are stronger than you know.

Slumdog Millionaire - A Review of a Great Movie

I recently watched the Hindi film "Slumdog Millionaire" and am not sure that it will be possible to watch a better movie the rest of the year. I know that the movie caught a lot of flack, mainly due to its title and its portrayal of the poorer classes of India, but I think that these critics have overlooked the true intentions of the writers, director, and actors.

Yes, it did portray a darker side of India; it did dwell, it seems, on the negative aspects of the plight of the people, but I think if one only dwells on these in their whole, then the true details tend to get muddled in the flow of the movie.

Jamal, in all his plight, was able to show forth three things that most people in much better circumstances have great difficulty expressing: true joy, true forgiveness, and true peace.

True joy: When Jamal jumped into the cess pool with the intent of getting to his hero for an autograph, he showed a determination like no other. But what caught my attention was when after he had the autograph, even though he was standing in one of the filthiest slums in India, and he was completely covered in human feces, all he saw was that his goal had been accomplished. Regardless of his circumstances and surroundings, Jamal proved that true joy comes from inside.

True forgiveness: Even though he told his brother that he would never forgive him for what he did to the girl, Jamal seemed to display a perpetual forgiving heart throughout the film to all those who had wronged him. His eyes were always looking ahead at what could be accomplished, not at what had been.

True peace: In line with his joy and forgiveness, Jamal displayed a peace that no one could take away. From dealing with the horrible living conditions, to facing police brutality, experiencing the downright bigotry of the television host, to enduring his brother's betrayals, we never seem to see Jamal quit or show any lack of desire.

What most people should take away from this movie isn't the depravity and poverty that are shown, but rather the positive things that someone in that situation can garner from his situation. Like the old saying goes "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade."
