One year short of a decade, Simon Cowell is leaving American Idol. We have to admit it, we will miss that guy. Despite all the tell-it-like-it-is comments by Simon, he is one judge we can always count on to sincerely coach a contestant on how he should improve. That is what American Idol is about anyway, grooming those with talent to become a star.
What many probably don't realize is that Simon's goodbye as a judge will not mean the end of his connection to American Idol. He has not even said that he will not remain one of the producers. If he does stay as a producer, he will still have a lot of creative and production contribution on the show. I am not a huge fan of the show but I do watch it every now and then. I don't like manufactured artists. I believe that people who are singing the songs must be able to write them. Their music should also be bigger than their image.
American Idol is sometimes frowned upon simply because they appear to manufacture talents. They are plucked out of a roster of people who sings, are coached, made up and made to sing songs of other people. Yeah, I can see some truth to the criticisms. However, there is also some sincerity to the show. Simon plays a big part on that. Almost all artists start out singing songs of other people, even The Beatles. They were writing songs of their own which were all bad at the start but, well, it is pretty obvious they became geniuses later on. That is similar to the American Idol contestants. The group plucks out people who have genuine talent in singing.
Then they groom them by making them perform and advising them on what they should do to make themselves more marketable. There is nothing wrong with that. Even heavy metal groups like Slipknot and Kiss come up with marketing ploys or image marketing moves to make them noticeable. There are millions upon millions of people who are trying to make it, you have to have an edge somehow.
Simon becomes more valuable to American Idol because while he gives advises on their image, he never forgets to remind them of the fact that this is all about music. That is what he watches out for. Yes, the dress is nice, the movement is nice but did they feel the words? Was the emotion there? Were you original in your interpretation?
Simon always said the show is about giving people a break, he never claimed to make or break careers. They open the door for people who MIGHT have the potential, the way they walk that room and how long they will last inside that room is all up to the talent. As I've said, I am not a big fan of the show but I do respect it and I respect Simon more. I will miss him. Cheers!
